The body of a 911 and the soul of a 356
Porsche unveiled the now famous 911 to the public in 1963 and made available to the public in 1964. The 911 was an expensive car in it's day, and many folks who lusted after one of these machines simply didn't have the dough to afford one. To ease the transition from the 356 to the 911, Porsche introduced in 1965 the 912.

In 1965, the 912 actually outsold the 911 by almost two to one. There were 6,401 produced that year. As demand ramped, Porsche responded by producing 9,090 912 model cars in 1966. This car was very similar to the 1965 model. In 1967, the drive shafts were modified, motor mounts enhanced, and a 5 gauge dash was standard.

Porsche continued to make the car up until 1969, when production ceased on the 912 and was replaced by the VW powered 914. It made a brief reappearance as the 912E in 1976, also powered by VW. It had a 21 Gallon fuel tank and was probably the Porsche with the longest cruising range to date.

Please make no mistake, this is a Porsche power plant, not a Volkswagen. Anyone who doubts this only need listen to a beetle and 912 run to hear the unmistakable difference. The body of a 911 and the soul of a 356.

What a beautiful machine!
  Bitten by the Porsche Bug
Talk is cheap. I've been "talking" about wanting a Porsche for many years. Back in High School, a friend gave me a book called, "Porsches For The Road". It details the available models up to that point. I have read the book cover to cover many times since then, admiring the photos of the various models and reading about their history.

This is my good friend Hal. I took this picture on his birthday. I think he likes to be in pictures.
